Grade 3 ELA: Making a Claim: Which is more powerful, land or water? RI.3.1
This English Language Arts Common Core video features third grade students from Wood Road Elementary School in Ballston Spa, NY. This lesson demonstrates focus standard RI.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text. After students read an informational text about the effects of land and water on each other, they answer a question they generated on their own, "Which is more powerful, land or water?". The teacher takes the time to model identifying textual evidence so that her students can find evidence to support their own claims. The students use a graphic organizer to note their evidence and identify where in the text it can be found. The graphic organizer will then be used to help students write a text-based response to the question.
